Ever since I saw the movie, "The People Vs. Larry Flynt" I have been intrigued about a certain value. In the movie, Larry Flynt is being bashed by conservative types who want him arrested, put out of business etc. as a pornographer. There is a scene in the movie where Larry is addressing a group of conservatives and he has a large video projector displaying images of graphic violence, murder, war, all sorts of carnage and bloodshed. The audience is mildly shocked at these images. Then he begins to project sexual images of naked women in various sorts of sexual demonstration, to which, the audience is outraged.
His point, and mine, is why is it that we, as a society, don't bat an eye at violence of all degrees of heinousness, in fact, we celebrate it in our mainstream entertainment such as movies and video games etc. But, when it comes to sex and porn, such things are looked upon with abhoration.
This is the basis of my concern. We as a society, would much rather approve murder and bloodshed, the stark destruction of our society over sex and procreation.
Look at some of the most heinous acts of recent history: The Columbine High School Massacre, The Virginia Tech. killings and all the other horrible acts of violence we have most recently witnessed. Many of them are blamed on the media; such as the perpetrators, were obsessed with violent movies, video games and the like.
Let's for a moment flip society's values for a moment and wonder what life would be like if we were to assign the topics of violence and murder to being only acquirable via seedy video stores, expensive pay per view channels and the various "underground" methods we currently use to obtain our porn of today. And then make available in our mainstream media and entertainment hard core porn and sexually explicit content. Would Columbine have been an orgy as opposed to a bloodbath? Would Virginia Tech. have been a giant gang bang rather then a massacre?
Would we as parents rather our kids have tons of sex and be obsessed with sexual topics? Or would we rather they be obsessed with violence, murder and all sorts of violence? Our media, I believe, paints it clearly. We would rather our children kill each other than fuck each other. How twisted is that?
